Patients with Alzheimer's are known to have lower levels of acetylcholine (a neurotransmitter that sends messages between brain cells) in the brain and this is thought to lead to some of the symptoms of the disease. Cholinesterase inhibitors increase levels of acetylcholine by preventing its breakdown, leading to a slower progression of symptoms in Alzheimer's disease.
